Casanare is one of the 32 departments of Colombia, one of the largest in area (44,490 km ²), representing 3.9% of the national territory and 17.55% of the Orinoco colombiana. Department name comes from the word spit Casanari , meaning Blackwater River.

HISTORY

The first settlers in the region were Native Tunebos, Guahibos, Saliva, Cusianas, Caquetíos, Piapocos, Amorúas, 5, who with the Spanish conquest of the Eastern Plains in the early sixteenth century and enslaved were reduced through parcels. In this century was created the Government of Los Llanos, which in 1660 was divided into the provinces of San Juan (south of the river Meta) and Santiago of the Watchtowers (north of the river).

BOUNDS

The department of Casanare bordered to the north by the Casanare River, which separates it from the department of Arauca. To the south and east by the Meta River, which separates it from the departments of Meta and Vichada. And on the west by the departments of Boyacá and Cundinamarca.
